Richard Dial & Gommaar Gilliams, Johnson Lowe Gallery — Trained as a machinist, Richard Dial started a workshop in Alabama in 1984 where he fabricated wrought-iron furniture. Over time, those pieces evolved into anthropomorphic sculptures, all derived from industrial materials. Curators say Dial’s exhibition, titled ‘American Idols,’ presents figuratively dynamic constructions that explore themes of power, history, family, and the African American experience.
The Lowe Gallery’s other current exhibition, ‘Sky Atlas,’ presents new oil paintings by Belgian artist Gommaar Gilliams; his work draws from fables, myths, parables, allegories, poetry, and astrological diagrams, fusing abstraction with figuration. Gilliams views his output as “being something very personal but yet universal at the same time.” — Kevin C. Madigan
